The Basics Of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), also known as myalgic encephalomyelitis is a complicated disorder that affects many Americans. The cause of the problem is not yet known; however, many theories are claiming that CFS can be caused by viral infections, stress, or a combination of causes. Also, there is no single test that can be used to confirm CFS and the symptoms can differ from person to person with daily fluctuations in severity. Some of the first signs of chronic fatigue syndrome include:

  • Feeling extremely fatigued. The feelings of fatigue can last for six months and more.
  • Severe fatigue cannot be explained by any underlying medical condition.
  • Fatigue can worsen with mental or physical activity, and that does not improve with rest.

The list of indicators does not end here, there are others too. The other symptoms of CFS include:

  • Problems with focus, concentration, and memory.
  • Headaches
  • Sore throat
  • Lymph node enlargement in armpits or neck.
  • Unexplained joint or muscle pain.
  • Dizziness

Causes Of CFS

As per the experts in the field, some people are born with a predisposition for chronic fatigue syndrome. This can be triggered by factors like:

  • Infection by human herpesvirus 6 or Epstein-Barr virus.
  • Impairment of the immune system.
  • Hormonal imbalances in hormones are produced by the pituitary gland, hypothalamus, and adrenal glands.

CFS can occur at any age, but statistics show that it commonly affects young to middle-aged people. Also, women are diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome more often than men.

Treatment Of CFS

Some of the issues associated with CFS can be improved with either OTC or prescription drugs and some natural health supplements. In case of depression, low doses of antidepressants can be used to help improve sleep. Over-the-counter medications like naproxen sodium can be used to treat pain. Sometimes, prescription medications used to treat fibromyalgia can also be used to treat pain. While having prescription medications to treat the problems associated with CFS, make sure to discuss the prescription refill strategy with your pharmacist.

Apart from taking medications, eating a healthy diet that is rich in monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, and devoid of carbohydrates and saturated fats can be helpful. Also, avoid alcohol consumption, sugary drinks, caffeinated drinks, and chemical sweeteners. Some natural supplements are also found to be effective against CFS. If you wish to try these natural supplements to fight CFS, you may discuss them with your healthcare provider.
